It's the End of Tomato Season!
It’s the end of tomato season! I have a deep love for tomatoes. There are so many beautiful varieties and so much you can do with them. During the summertime I cook with tomatoes almost every day. Now that the season for them is over, you can find lots of green tomatoes at your farmers market Green tomatoes with this bright, vibrant color are tomatoes that didn’t have ripened yet. They have to be picked before the weather gets too cold. The good news is there are lots of things you can do with green tomatoes! They have a bright, more tangy flavor and they hold up well for cooking because of their firm texture. Here are some ideas of things you can do with green tomatoes:
Fried Green Tomatoes! Who doesn’t love a fried green tomato? Slice your tomatoes into rounds, season with salt and pepper, dredge in flour (I like to add some Cajun seasoning to my flour), then dip in an egg and buttermilk mixture and lastly in breadcrumbs. Then fry them in cooking oil on the stovetop until crispy. Serve with a nice aioli sauce OR treat your fried green tomatoes like eggplant cutlets and prepare like an eggplant Parmesan.
Salsa Verde! Instead of using tomatillos, use green tomatoes! Chop finely and mix with diced yellow onion, jalapeños, garlic, fresh cilantro, lime juice, salt & pepper, and sugar (to balance out the tartness). Serve over tacos or with your favorite chips.
Green Tomato Soup! Simmer chopped green tomatoes with vegetable broth, garlic, yellow onion, celery salt & pepper. Once vegetables are cooked down, blend until smooth. You can top with cream & crispy bacon for some richness!
